This petition will be sent to FIFA ahead of the release of the report on the pros and cons of an expanded tournament, one which will presumably exclude or downplay the terrible environmental and human consequences of any decision to further enlarge the game.

Football megaevents have become significant drivers of the climate crisis. In the wider context of a spiraling climate emergency, and following another summer of deadly heatwaves, wildfires, and floods, it would be madness to intentionally consider increasing their impacts. Naturally, that is what FIFA is currently doing, contemplating a 64 team, 128 game World Cup, requiring 20 stadiums, and taking two months to play out over six countries on two continents, with even greater environmental and human costs.
The Degrowth Football Collective (DFC) is launching the Extra Time Initiative to leverage fan support to stop this ecocidal madness.
Join the DFC in letting FIFA know you do not want a 64 team mega-tournament that will kill roughly 110,000 people. Let Infantino (or whomever replaces him) know that you want less, better football, and endorse a return to the historical norm of a 32 or 24 team tournament. There can be no football on a dead planet. Degrowth is the only way to significantly decarbonize the beautiful game. We want the sport we love to endure, but we want to be good ancestors also. Demand football that is truly run “For the Game. For the World.”
